Artist Statement

The round stylized flower is a repeating image in my work. It references my early visual influences from home decoration, patterns in textiles, and folk art. When I was 5 my mother took me to the hardware store and allowed me to choose wallpaper for my new room. The paper I chose had a large scale repeating simple graphic flower, a popular motif in the 1960’s. I fell asleep looking at it for many years and consider it one of my first empowering creative acts: the ability to create an environment and the pattern itself both left a lasting imprint on me.

The Red Flower Tile (Chunk, Bump and Split), 2022 grouping was made in my studio in rural Northwest CT. The swamp maple used was pulled into the studio from fallen trees on the property. Tiles pieces were hand cut out of clay, fired with a saturated red glaze, and inlaid into shaped and sanded logs. The final results merges decorative floral elements with pieces of the landscape. The series of large shallow hand thrown bowls was inspired by this sculpture grouping; using the same tile template pattern and saturated red glaze.
